Eastern Orthodox Christianity: The Theotokos

Many understand that this Synod was about the condemnation of Nestorius's teaching, but few may realize that the arguments centered around the use of the term Theotokos, or "Mother of God," for the Blessed Virgin Mary. This was so much the case that Bishop Kallistos (Ware) has written: "The same primacy that the word homoousion occupies in the doctrine of the Trinity, the word Theotokos holds in the doctrine of the Incarnation." (The Orthodox Church, p. 25)

James in Texts and Studies, ii., 3, from a manuscript in the Bodleian Library, which he assigns to the eleventh century. The original he assigns to the ninth century, and regards it as a late and clumsy compilation based on (1) the Assumption Legends and (2) the Apocalypse of Paul.
