Open and Affordable Textbook Initiative @ LMU

This guide is designed to help LMU faculty learn about, discover, adapt, and create open and/or free alternatives to traditional costly course materials.

What is Pressbooks?

Pressbooks is an authoring and editing platform (WordPress-based) for LMU faculty and staff to adapt, create, and publish Open Educational Resources (OER) such as openly licensed books.


Key Features:

  • Adapt existing books from the Pressbooks Directory
  • Create new books from scratch utilizing Pressbooks templates
  • Enrich content with math notation, videos, audio, web annotation (Hypothesis), and interactive elements like quizzes and other forms of assessment (H5P)
  • Publish books in multiple file formats (PDF, ePub, XHTML, etc.)
  • Conform books with accessibility standards

Get Started with Pressbooks

The LMU Library provides access to Pressbooks to LMU faculty and staff at no cost. The platform can be used to write and publish openly licensed books for Loyola Marymount University courses.
