Processing and Transcribing The Interview

Quick Checklist for Transcribing an Oral History Interview:

  • Put title of interview and corresponding audio file on top page of text (use Header tool to have this on every page)

  • Transcript should reflect the conversation as closely as possible
  • Use consistent verb tenses and subject agreement (ex: he was, she was, they were, etc.)
  • Capture the interviewee's reactions as closely as possible. Do not edit incorrect grammar unless asked by the interviewee.
  • Explain any local sayings using footnotes or brackets (ex: "he bailed" [he left])
