How to Read a Poem: Reference Works

This short guide will help you get into a poem more deeply, and help you describe your perceptions more exactly.

Your next step

Once you've finished using this process, you can look for some good articles and books to see what perceptions others have had about the poem you are dealing with.  Don't be shy about asking a reference librarian for help.

You can also look at our Introduction to Poetry LibGuide.  It will help with getting reference works, books, finding individual poems, finding articles, and identifying useful Web sites.

As the poet John Ciardi used to say,

"Good Words to You!"
