Searching Names: Home

A guide to help you determine how to structure searches for unusual or variant names (classical, medieval, transliterated from another alphabet or romanized from another writing system).

"What's in a Name?" -W. Shakspear *

Searching for some names can be difficult, so here are some pages on the kinds of variations you're likely to find if you go beyond the easy pickings.  Whether you are using an online catalog or database, or using a print index in a book or encyclopedia, you need to be flexible and allow for both logical and illogical variations in spelling or transcription.  This LibGuide should be a help in your searching.  Click on the tab that represents the type of name for which you are searching.

And let us know if this LibGuide is useful, as well as if there are some types of name problems we need to add.

*This is one of several spellings used before Will's name was standardized.

A Rose is a Rows is Arose...

This LibGuide is meant as a help for those searching for unusual or variant names.  But, like language itself, it is truly a work in progress.  Believe what you will, take it as a starting point, don't rely on it as authoritative (I'm not a linguist) ... but see if it can be of help.
